I'm tired.... What a day. So the picnic thing was really a fundraiser for foster children so there were all these kids... and my job was to run this game booth where the kids threw these rings at a peg board and if it stayed then they won a prize. Simple. And we had SO many prizes... the deal was each kid could get one prize (no matter how many times they won) and there were 12 booths. And the prizes were BIG, computer games, huge stuffed animals, bags of candy, books, puzzles, (there was even a Boppit... dang ... and some stuff that really shouldn't go to kids like a handpainted doll and a full set of really nice Babushka dolls) and so these kids ran around with big trash bags FILLED with stuff... especially since the rules about one prize per kid was relaxed after they realized that they had about 30 prizes per kid on average. So some of the older kids really made a haul.... I'm talking can't-fit-any-more-into-the-back-of-your-SUV kind of haul. It was amazing. They were like little Santa Clauses in July. And apparently this company had donated thousands of these stuffed sea creatures.... and every kid had the whole set and there were STILL leftovers. They were the bottom of the barrel kind of prize... and worth like $6 each too! So we snagged some at the very end after teh kids had taken the fill (the last half hour... we had cleaned up the games and it was give away the stuff to the kids for the heck of it... they were grabbing stuff and throwing it back .... kinda like the bargain bin at a blowout sale... except the stuff was really nice and free to boot... I *so* wanted to be a kid again.
Yeah and there was free food (although nothing vegetarian... so I got shafted) and a raffle and all-around good times.

Reports of my deathly illness (mostly by me) have been greatly exaggerated. The antibiotics are kicking in and I'm almost back to my nightly six hours of sleep... I've been watching lots of TV though, which is kinda depressing. There's that sort of semi-conscious state where you don't want to expend the energy to process a book. Just imagine, this is the state millions of Americans find themselves in every prime time weekday. Rest assured, my TV watching has been limited to the much geekier realm of TNG reruns... (yay 80's sci-fi. Best quote: "You ugly bags of mostly water!" --said by a weird speck of light to the human crew)
You've seen those corny Apple commercials. (Anyone who honestly describes working with their computer as "like being in a bad relationship" needs help, in my opinion.) Now someone's posted to the O'Reilly Network a great parody, complete with the banjo music... (and this one's for you, Dave)

Whew, I just went to Jammix... which is this evening social dance thing... Tons of fun, lots of waltz, polka, swing and some really fast lindy (I even tried a chacha and a tango). I'm exhausted and my feet hurt. Dave was there too... so you might even get a rant from him too. A lot of people I didn't even know were on campus were there. Very cool. At least there is no work tomorrow.
Unfortunately that doesn't mean I get to sleep in ... I am voluteering at a picnic for kids so I'll be up at 8... still not bad... but it means I'm going to have to go to bed now.
I might update tomorrow morning.

Hey, don't dis euchre. You'll have the entire state of Michigan against you... all screaming epithets like, "at least we don't have earthquakes!" But really, take pity on Michigan. Mudslides, earthquakes, wildfires? Ha! Michigan may (or may not) have an asteroid striking the Lower Peninsula in 2019. The estimated impact will (or won't) completely destroy everything from Detroit to Grand Rapids, and unleash earthquakes as far away as Washington. Of course, the resulting 45 degree drop in temperature and clouding of the atmosphere will (or won't) likely destroy most ecosystems across the globe, and it could (or not) wipe out every life on Earth (or just North America). Though it's pretty unlikely Michigan will be wiped off the face of the Earth, it sure beats that so-called Big One that might bury LA...
And for the record, I procrastinate all the time..

Ok... got the third comic up. Apologies to mike... he really does not procrastinate that much but every time we want to play some card game, he always suggests Euchre... so I had to tease him about it... and anyway... he needed another round of applause and I wanted to stick to the theme of procrastination (which is what this entire thing is really). I'm really glad that mike is doing this for me ... really. Also... there are new navigational buttons (purdy) so you can see the last TWO (count them TWO) comics...
Ok.. so now that we have given you the option to post comments, please do so .... I really want to know who reads these rants.. tell us. Please.

First there was Usenet. And people could talk. Then there was the Web. And it was static. Only the select few could speak. Then there were bulletin board scripts. And once again people could talk. Then there were bloggers. Once again, only the anointed blogmeisters could rant. The few once again oppressed the many with their tireless rants.
... But now there are comments. Click the link above each post to react. We may move it around, it just happens to look good up there. Who knows, it might encourage us to write shorter rants. And I'm too damn lazy to do anything about it right now.
Enjoy all... let us know exactly how psychotic we are. Ridicule us for our procrastination. Just leave some freakin' comments so I don't feel like a loser...

No I don't get time to check my e-mail ... but there is that time before work really starts for everyone to kinda ease into the day, have a cup of coffee, eat a bagel and check their e-mail. No more than 10 mins total... otherwise people start asking questions. I'm salaried (whee!) which means I get in damned early, leave kinda early but get no real lunch break... I get a I-don't-think-this-reaction-will-blow-up-if-I-don't-watch-it-for-the-next-twenty-minutes-so-I'll-grab-lunch-now-break.
The Unix-y poetry... I'll admit it made me smile.. but I definately "GROAN"-ed immediately after. Uh, you CS-y types.
Again. I have little real stuff to add. Today is cleanup day in the lab... which means the lowly intern cleans up everyone else's messes while other people -- the "real scientists" -- keep making their messes. Oh well... I am being productive I guess... I mean I set up these 48-hour reactions which are running... *... blah blah blah.. boring Chemistry talk ... blah blah blah*

You get allocated time to check your e-mail in the morning? Wow... the MIS nazis here keep tabs on what everyone's looking at. The only time we're allowed to surf for non-business stuff is when we're off the clock. Lunch starts at noon sharp, because that's when they take over my computer for a virus scan, rendering it useless for any real work. A quick 15-minute trip to Subway or McDonald's provides food, and another 15 minutes or so consumes it. But they deduct an hour's worth of pay from me every day so I figure I might as well use every last second of it to be unproductive... heh heh...
Welcome to the wonderful world of Web scripting, Dave... unfortunately keenspace doesn't let us run our own perl scripts (and neither does Stanford). But feel free to tinker with the templates... to make a backup of the blogger template, just copy the entire text box into a Notepad document and save it to your hard drive. and yes, emacs rocks my world. (as much as a text editor could ever rock my world...) Where are you working again?
and now, for something truly geeky, this Unix-y poetry, courtesy of Don Ehrhardt, one of the MIS minions at Wesleyan:

I am admin... hear me ROAR... um... and now so is Dave. Just a quick head's up, Keenspace (as far as I can tell) does not support frames and complicated stuff (other than tables) so the site is a little ... on the sparse side. If you're messing with the HTML, just be careful. We don't have a back up yet. (And don't forget to update after everything you do... I sent you the link last night).
Speaking of... don't forget to update after you post to the rantlist (as it is now known). Otherwise it doesn't show up on the main page.

And while I'm waiting for the Aleve to kick in so I can go back to bed I happened to check the blog (welcome Dave! give yourself a nickname), which I prefer to call a rantlist, myself, because that's what it is--a bunch of people ranting about minutiae of their lives or their own opinions that sounded pretty interesting at the time. If ya SMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL....what the ROCK....IS...cookin'.
FINALLY....the ROCK has come back to a2dlife! That's right, Super Dave finally got his lazy butt in gear and signed up for the blogger. Now if only Cheng and Mike could get me to actually write some comic stories, we'd be doing REALLY well, eh guys. Actually, I JUST now thought of one....wow! I've actually thought of several. Dude, I'm so awesome. God only knows if anyone besides me will find them funny, but what can ya do?
So about the strip: I dunno what really to say. It's probably gonna be a bit different from others you read. There won't be comics once a week about any of the authors getting drunk out of their minds, there won't be any pets named after drinks or drugs, there won't be any blatantly underdressed women -- though the few women I've seen Cheng draw have been generously proportioned, to put it mildly....;). Mostly this is going to be about all of the stupid stuff that Cheng, Mike, Busayo, and I do on an almost-daily basis. :D Or at least that's what I think. In the end, Cheng's in charge so it'll be about whatever he wants it to be about.
On a side note: I absolutely hate the word "blog." Becky (my girlfriend, who will probably show up in this thing at some point) explained to me where the term comes from, but that doesn't change the fact that it sounds just plain dumb to me. Don't ask me why....it just sounds like one of those crappy old, early-80's puzzle games for the NES or something. Whatever, I just hate it, plain and simple.

Actually if I were planning to choose which day I called in sick to work, today would be it. It's been sunny and 77 degrees, almost California-like I dare say. Went to the doctor, who took one look at my white-blood cell count (five times above normal) and told me, "You're sick!" That I knew already. Bronchitis, with the beginnings of pneumonia. Fun fun. But after tracking down my parents' prescription insurance (would you believe these drugs would have cost me $110 otherwise?), I'm on some nice antibiotics.
Time for a looong relaxing bath. Tomorrow I probably have to go back to work...wait a minute, what's the weather like?

Comic number 2. Oh yeah. So... I really don't have much to say... except... um.. enjoy. I did this comic at the VERY last minute... I know that I said I had another one uploaded... but I didn't like it.. and I decided to redo it at about 10:30 tonight.... and yes, it does take me over an hour to do each one (even though this was mostly cut and paste.) So now you know... I do wait til the very last minute to do these comics. CRFH!!! is here and it IS pretty funny although you really have to start at the beginning of the storyline to appreciate it. (And you have to appreciate Maritza's lets-throw-random-stuff-at-my-readers-and-do-what-they-least-expect kind of humor.)
In other news, Dave is back from wherever he was so you should hopefully see a comment by him sometime soon. I also went wall climbing this evening so I'm sore beyond belief. I couldn't even do the "kinda-easy" wall... I really need to work out, I am SO out of shape... Bah... and I know that every inch of me will be in pain tomorrow.

Alas... Busayo and Dave have yet to discover the joy of random ranting... at least outside the chatlist, right Dave?
I'm at work again, because no, I didn't get a chance to so much as answer my e-mail because I spent all last night fulfilling orders for Mom's business. She's been gone since last week and will still be gone most of this week so I came back to find six orders needing to be fulfilled (and none of them were Ecuadorean scam artists this time!) By the time I was done it was midnight, my self-imposed bedtime.
I've been getting my wish though - it's been stormy here the past couple days. Around 50K people lost power, and there was some sweet lightning. The NWS even went so far as to call it a "severe" storm. In my book, though, it it doesn't spawn tornadoes, it ain't nothing but a sprinkle. Sunday's even had so little thunder the radio was saying that a "rainstorm" was knocking down power lines and trees. Yes sir, that be some strong rain...

Whee!!!! First comic... if we are lucky... From now on... my rants ABOUT the comic are going to be entirely in bold (like this one) so that you can tell what is going on (and what is important to read ). Anyway... this is the #1 comic. I know it isn't exactly the exciting stunning super-cool intro that you have all been waiting for... it isn't even that funny... (well it kinda is if you know me really well)... ok so it also isn't in color but that's the way its going to be... I'll do a color one every other week -- maybe... but it IS a comic . So there! A big HA! to everyone who thought I couldn't do it. And a big superflyinghobbessqueezehuggle to everyone who supported me so far... you know who you are.Important stuff: This comic is going to update WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT. Which is hopefully Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I will be taking breaks whenever I'm away from my computer (duh) and whenever I feel like taking a break. I am the cartoonist. Therefore I am almighty. Yep, you heard it here. I can do ANYTHING with the comic I feel like... (hey, no laughing... I have a right to an ego trip.). I will also be putting up some hand-drawn stuff (not like this tablet drawn stuff) when I get the time to draw... You'll like it, I promise... Ok... maybe not, but at least the art is going to be better than this stuff. While I have your attention... I'd like to applaud Mike (Zozo) who has worked so very hard to make this whole thing actually jive. He was the one that got the blogger to work, he was the one who messed with all the keenspace tags... he did pretty much everything so far and I really really owe him one... especially since it is my pet project and I've been dragging him into it and making him do things. As far as thank you go... let's see... Dave (you'll meet him later) gets one for introducing me to web comics, for induging this crazy idea of mine and for writing at least half of the future comic strip plots so that they won't suck as badly as this one does. To Maritza Campos for her wonderful comic (College Roomies from Hell!!!) which is still my favorite and also to the entire community at the CRFH!!! Forums for their helpful comments on my terrible art... and not laughing (too hard) at me. To Greg Dean of Real Life for writing a cool comic and using illustrator which is lots of pain and there-is-no-way-I-would-ever- do-that-to-myself kind of torture but he manages to make a wonderfully funny comic out of it. To Young Wang and Co. of NekoBox who gave me the idea of the blogger (and therefore torturing Mike who had to make it work) which is a fantastic idea. To Tycho and Gabe of Penny Arcade which is funny stuff... which also uses the messaging stuff and for making me cry and whimper under my desk when I see what Gabe can do with a tablet. And lastly to David Willis of Its Walky! and Jamie Robertson of Clan Of The Cats both of which are spectacular comics and are MUST READS. Last point. No I do not read Sluggy. There that is established. So... I'm actually kinda sleepy now. And I have work tomorrow. So I'm heading out to have some quiet time with my pillow. G'night all. --C

Hmmm... I'm still trying to work on the first comic... The Adobe illustrator thing is taking way longer than it should... I'm thinking of moving to pencil & paper. Decisions decisions. This is really tough... It takes me about an hour to make a comic with pencil... but it will be black and white. It takes MUCH longer (3 hours?) to do it in illustrator but it seems like it should take much LESS time (1/2 hour) and be in color. Real Life is a comic done with illustrator and CRFH!!! is one done in pencil. Penny Arcade seems to use both. I could also do the thing where I draw a number of really nice standards and just move them around and change the dialogue... without every changing thier position. I can't think of a comic that does this right now but I HAVE seen them. I really can't decide.
If you have an idea... um. e-mail me. yeah.
